Historical error

The Canarian Garote Fighting Federation expresses its strong disagreement with the information disseminated and recorded regarding the recent unveiling of the institutional plaque honoring Don Francisco Santana Suárez, installed at the Casa Condal in Telde (May 21, 2026). It has been verified that the plaque contains inaccurate information that does not correspond to documented historical reality. (See news article)

As stated in the request for clarification sent to the Illustrious City Council of Telde dated May 19, 2026 (and which can be accessed through this link), there are relevant errors in relation to the supposed teaching activity carried out at the Casa Condal, with the indicated chronology and with the context in which the figure of Don Francisco Santana Suárez was made known.

The dissemination of this erroneous data not only generates confusion, but also distorts the real process of recovery and transmission of the garrote tradition in our islands, by failing to tell the truth.

The Canary Garote Fighting Federation has been working tirelessly for decades for the conservation, study and rigorous transmission of this traditional practice. We regret what happened and at the same time consider the dissemination of information and versions that alter or distort sufficiently documented and verified facts to be especially worrying.

The Canary Garote Fighting Federation does not know if these interpretations respond to an interested distortion of our history, whether with the aim of constructing “alternative” academic stories, lacking rigor, favoring people belonging to areas with public responsibility, or inconsistently appropriating a tradition for the purposes of political gain. In any case, we understand that this type of unfortunate actions damages the cultural heritage that it is our responsibility to defend and preserve.

For this reason, it reiterates the imperative need for any institutional initiative related to our combat traditions to be supported by criteria of veracity, historical rigor and permanent collaboration with entities that have been working for decades on the preservation of the Canary Islands garrote, based on respect, well-founded documentation and social responsibility. Likewise, it requests that the error that appears on the plate be corrected.
