Masters of the Land

The extensive research conducted by Jorge Domínguez Naranjo over more than forty years led to the location, documentation, and cataloging of over 160 informants of garote and tolete fighting throughout the Canary Islands.

Among them are those now recognized as true masters of the land, having preserved and transmitted the knowledge, techniques, and values ​​of these traditional practices to new generations through this documentation. Thanks to the work of compilation, study, and dissemination carried out by Jorge Domínguez, this valuable cultural legacy has been preserved and has reached us today.

This research was primarily funded with his own resources, with only occasional institutional support, and sometimes facing incomprehension or opposition from those who saw their position within this field threatened. However, his perseverance and commitment to preserving these traditions ensured that the flame of garote and tolete fighting remained alive and could continue to be passed down from generation to generation.

The Canarian Garote Fighting Federation and the National Association of Canarian Tolete Fighting constitute the communities that carry and transmit this native defensive knowledge.
